He was inspired to lead a Christian life of poverty as a beggar and itinerant preacher. One of the most venerated figures in Christianity, Francis was canonized by Pope Gregory IX on 16 July 1228. He is commonly portrayed wearing a brown habit with a rope tied around his waist, featuring three knots that symbolize the three Franciscan vows of poverty, chastity, and obedience. ** In 1219, he went to Egypt in an attempt to convert the sultan al-Kamil and put an end to the conflict of the Fifth Crusade. In 1223, he arranged for the first live nativity scene as part of the annual Christmas celebration in Greccio. According to Christian tradition, in 1224 Francis received the stigmata during the apparition of a Seraphic angel in a religious ecstasy. ** He founded the men's Order of Friars Minor, the women's Order of St. Clare, the Third Order of St. Francis and the Custody of the Holy Land. Once his community was authorized by Pope Innocent III, he withdrew increasingly from external affairs. ** Francis is associated with patronage of animals and the environment. It became customary for churches to hold ceremonies blessing animals on his feast day of the fourth of October. He is known for devotion to the Eucharist. Along with Catherine of Siena, he was designated patron saint of Italy. He is also the namesake of the American city of San Francisco. ** Venerated in; Catholic Church, Anglican Communion, Lutheranism, Old Catholic Church, Episcopal Church (United States); ** Canonized; July 16/1228, Assisi, Papal States by Pope Gregory IX; // Full Color 6-7/8" x 10" Color Comic Book magazine; Mary Jo Duffy and Roy Gasnick story; Wraparound cover and Art by John Buscema and Marie Severin; SOLD OUT);

ILLUMINATOR (Square-bound; NELSON / Marvel CHRISTIAN Comics)

This joint project between Christian publisher, Nelson, and Marvel Comics stars Andy Prentiss, your average underconfident teenager. His parents had sent him away to camp for the summer, where his camp mates had a great deal of fun making sport of the uncoordinated youngster. One night, they even tricked him into going on a “wampus hunt” and Andy stood in wait for hours in the dark, holding a bag and waiting to trap the mythical “wampus.”  Then Andy saw the strange lights in the sky. They grew in brilliance until they seemed to cover him. Suddenly, Andy found he had great powers, including the ability to fly. Although these powers gave Andy confidence, he still didn’t understand what to do with them. The answer came when an evil spirit began terrorizing the town he lived in, draining the life force from its residents. An old church caretaker encouraged Andy to find his spiritual faith and to battle evil as the Illuminator.

Comic Alliance =  A gay Mormon hero, the character is a personal project for Andersen, who is himself gay and a Mormon — and also, perhaps, a hero. The series follows Sam Shepherd, who is approached on his wedding night by the Angel Abish — one of the few named female characters in the Book of Mormon — and asked to become the Hand of God on Earth. The Mormon Church has a reputation for not being accepting of homosexuality, making this a comic that directly addresses some quite powerful taboos within the religion. Coming from Brian’s own personal experiences, this seemed like a project well worth exploring further, so we spoke to him about how it came together, and why he wanted to tell this story.  VF/NM, 9.0 = $15.00);
