>> COLLINS WHITE CIRCLE (1942 - 1952);
Vintage Canadian Mass Market PAPERBACKS FOR SALE;
SCARCITY - 1 through 11; Many 10 to 20 year veteran collectors of the White Circles, still need 100+ books for their sets, I don't know of a single complete set in existence!!! This Series is MUCH more difficult to complete, than it's later counterpart (Harlequin) & competitor; Throughout this index & inventory I have noted the relative rarity of the White Circle Books based on 25 years experience dealing with them. Regional discrepancies may occur, but we try to give a rating of the overall picture. The terms we use if equated to a scale of 1 to 11 would go in this order from the most Common to RAREST; NOTE that MOST of these are located in CANADA & even the “Common” titles can be scarce in other countries. They were MUCH less Collected (and thus save from destruction) than Harlequin & many other publishers.
In general they are very scarce in better than VG condition. MANY titles are the FIRST Paperback Editions, that were
originally released in even Rarer UK Collins Hardcover Books. Many had NO other Paperback Printings. >>>
The Paperbacks published in this series, are among the all-time rarest Paperbacks, among the all-time most Valuable Paperbacks, among the all-time most collectible Paperbacks, & among the all-time most under-rated undervalued Paperbacks. [NO Complete List exists; Mine is probably the World's MOST complete list; VERY few accurate prices
are recorded in the Price Guides, because SO FEW copies ever surface for sale on almost 1/3 their entire output];

HISTORY of the Vintage Canadian COLLINS WHITE CIRCLE, Mass Market Paperbacks;
(by Douglas W. Sulipa)
Collins is a British publishing company of paperbacks & hardcovers, their paperback were printed in Britain in the early 1940's, & in 1942 they expanded to Canada, opening a separate & distinct line books with a crude graphics motif, like their British parent company. More of their 1942 books were number & in no proper list of the order of issue or what actually exists is known. So I've arranged them in order alphabetically and have assigned a "no Number" or NN number from #1-54 to them. These 54, as far as I can determine, are all existing NN's. None of the 1942 books had illustrated covers, except NN (37B). All others had Text-only covers, mainly being a review of the book inside. They main quite interesting in historic perspective, due to their crude covers & "period" look. Most NN's are RARE today, due to low initial print runs & sales. The book review front covers were an interesting, but doomed marketing experiment. At the same time (in 1942), they coupled this marketing technique with another device. They used 3 different cover motif's, probably in hopes that potential customers, could easily identify their favorite type of book among the others on the shelves. (1) Green/Yellow/Black motif, always in the same standard patterns: most of these are Mystery/Thrillers. (2) Orange & Black motif, in the same standard pattern: contained Humor, Non-Fiction & Canadian authors. (3) Blue/Green/Black motif, in the same standard pattern - only 4 books used this RARE motif, all 4 had green edges & all 4 were Westerns! This color/content motif is almost synonymous today with Penquin paperbacks, but Collins used it too, in their early no-numbered paperbacks!
In 1943, numbering began, with #51. The text-only or "Type" covers began to die out, and very crude line-art began on the covers. Many were a combination of largely text, with small line-art illustrations on the cover. Cover text still usually reviewed the book inside. Throughout their history, almost all White Circle's Had a full page at the front oc the book devoted to a synopsis of the story & a line or 2 about the author. Most also carried the same or similar info on the back cover (the back covers often carried synopsis' of other White Circles).
As far as I can tell, non of the no-numbered issues were reissued as NN's. But, by as early as 1943/44, a few books were reissue, using the same number, with very minor differences, mainly different color edges, etc. This practice of reissuing, continued sporadically, mainly on their best selling books, until about 1949, after which few reissues occured. Later reissues were re-numbered. I've noted all known variations, and have labeled them different "impressions" or IMP's. I've taken a educated quesses on which is the first impression, by examining book and colors, advertising, reorder lists & by looking at surrounding books. Many books appear to be common, but this is often because 3 impressions were issued, giving the appearance of being three time as common as they are. Almost without exception, reissues are scarcer than 1st impressions. some are as much as ten times scarer! I've noted relative scarcity. If the reissue is scarcer than the 1st imp., then the value is about the same. If the reissue has the same scarcity, then the reissue should be about 25 cent less. If the reissue is MUCH scarcer than the 1st imp., then the reissue can be priced 25% to 50% above the 1st imp. since completion's will have an tough time finding an example.
All issues #100-118 are reprints of no-numbered issues. It can be assumed that Collins planned a "100's" prefix number, as a series of reprints, perhaps simply to get numbers on their no-numbered titles, for identification purposes. #100-118 were all printed in 1944 alongside their regular order lists. Issue #100-110 are all very RARE, some of the RAREst issues in the White Circle set! Issue #105 &106 had a 2nd imp., possibly the others did too. In spite of this, they remain very RARE. It can be assumed that Collins was experimenting with #101-110 and issued a very small print run (possibly limited distribution or even for mail order back orders only??!!) Issues #111,112,115-117 are easier to locate (#116 had 2 imp's, 3111,112 &115 had 3 different imp), so they must have raised their print runs a lot on these. Finally, #118 is again very RARE, so we assume they lost confidence, or changed policy on their "100" series of reprints, cutting back to a very low print run & then dropping the practice. They went back to their original practice of making additional impressions under the same issue number. Since they were already on #211 by the end of 1944, they simply carried on that numbering, never bothering to fill in the missing numbers #119-199!!!
Collins from 1942-1944 was managed mainly thru their main office in Britian, hence the "British", "Penquin"-type book look! Sometime in 1943/44, perhaps due to the escalation of the War in Europe, Collins of Canada received more & more autonomy and control of the Canadian White Circle line. This was the beginning of Canada's 1st unique & important paperback company (7 YEARS BEFORE HARLEQUIN)! The rest is History! Signs of change began by late 1944. The new management realized that a "British look" paperback could not long survive in competition with their American Counterparts. Marketing changes were necessary. This new management was likely responsible for eliminating the "100" reprint series, perhaps to avoid the confusion of 2 coexistent numbered series, & the problems that would occur when the reprints hit #199, & most likely to just to install the simple, straightforward method of new imp.'s under the small number. The covers start to improve by late 1944. In 1945, text-only covers are completely dropped in favor of line-art, illustrated covers, with text limited to titles to titles & a strip at the top of the cover. This small strip was a very interesting marketing technique, using "yellow journalism" type quotations! Quotes like "Judy was a lady & her past was shady" appeared, enticing book browsers to buy. As time goes by, these quotes get racier. I've quoted many of these in the index, as I feel they are a very important & collectible footnote to the early history of the paperback. About 95% of statements in quote marks in my index are front cover quotes, the other 5% are back cover quotes I found interesting. As of 1945, all covers had full line-art illustrations, rather than the often tiny illustrations of the earlier books. Virtually all 1943/48 covers and a lot thereafter were drawn by M. Paull!! Paull's art varied in quality & in scope, from crude to experimental to very creative. His covers bring to mind the works of the likes of JONAS & also DELL's abstract or pop-art type cover styles! One of Paull's most interesting trademarks was, whenever a title had a number in it, he would make the numbers large & artistically work them into the cover art, in an abstract of "pop" style, usually very colorful & often with quite striking results. Paull was especially good at cartoonish-style covers, on books such as the Margery Sharp titles, most of which had a good-girl-art look which would hold its own the Playboy magazine cartoons of today! Paull liked to use symbols such as skulls, nooses, ghostly images, shadows, etc. He broke new ground with risque nude, bondage, lingerie, suggestive & other type covers, IN THE MID-1940's years before most companies.
By 1947 the new White Circle management had a good feel the market, as did more exploitive, atmospheric & enticing. The cover quotes continue to get more lurid & sensationalistic. BUT, by far the most important innovation of 1947, was the beginning of the PHOTO COVER appearances! They get a several year jump on most of their US competitions. Not only were they the 1st company to regularly use photo covers, they even went to great lengths to take them. Professional Photographers hired Canadian models. Most of whom posed in bikini's, gowns, etc., CREATING A TOTALLLY NE GENRE OF "PHOTO-GOOD-GIRL-ART-COVERS" (a typical U.S. example of this genre is Diverset's "Reform School Girl" digest!). Photo's wre very professionally composed, often even with special settings. This is RARE in the entire history of paperbacks & must be seen to be fully appreciated! Many photo covers even have wardrobe credits for gowns, etc. supplied for cover poses by fashion companies!! Couple these great photo covers with the sensatinalistic cover quotes & you have a product which led an industry! Collins was a major inspiration to modern books, they were 20-30 years ahead of their time. This is probably White Circles most significant single contribution to paperback history! Their photo/ experimental/ abstract/ exploitive & risque covers were in the forefront of the paperback cover & marketing revolution of the late 1940's & early 1950's!
In 1948, the quality of covers in general continued to improve, Paull started to step aside, letting more new artists do the covers, & although less photo covers appear than in 1947, they for the most part were great. By far the most significant event of 1948 was issue #384, the 1st paperback app. of one of the most important mystery books in history, Mickey Spillane's 1st book - "I, the Jury", two months before the release of Signet #699 in the USA! Issue #384 was one of a few Collins books that had absolutely no USA distribution due to contractual copyright agreements! "Parade of Pleasure" called the Signet "I, the Jury" cover sleazy; the Collins cover is much nicer, more exploitive & more lurid!
Several exploitive were re-issued with new numbers & new, better covers. The management was aware obviously that covers were selling their books. In many instances, the new cover editions are so much more attractive, that they become more desirable & valuable than their 1st printings. Each new cover is like a unique new edition.
1949 saw the last phase of major change at Collins, when their cover policy changes again. Almost overnight all covers become painted covers, only 7 line-art & a mere 2 photo covers appear. The new covers in general, were nice to great, with but a few mediocre ones, a good effort for their first painted cover year. In the pre-1949 years, many covers look like painted covers. What was actually used was a combination of pen/ink and wash, producing a "painted" wash look, many very well executed. Issue #403, one of the few line-art covers of 1949 is arguably their single most exploitive cover, illustrating a book on sea stories! 1950 was the year, the 8 year reign of White Circle started to feel the initial blows of their fledging competitor, Harlequin. Harlequin started in 1949 with nibbles into their market, by 1950 these started to become bites. The question was, could 2 major Canadian companies survive competing with each other AND the American market? Both Collins & Harlequin sold, on a limited basis, to the USA, mainly northern states. Harlequin managed to penetrate deeper into the USE than Collins. By 1950, Collins' print runs were down a bit & the range of their distribution network declined significantly. 1959 saw 5 more photo covers, 1951 saw 6. By 1951 Collins' print runs were down again & many of these books remain RARE today! Harlequin established a battle plan and caught Collins unprepared to break its near-monopoly & lose a share of its market. By this time Collins' people were masters of marketing, & were far better than their new competitors. But, this didn't help, they were not geared to share their market with an able new competitor. 1951 saw perhaps their most consistently great period of cover art, with loads of good-girl-art, violent covers, ets. By 1952, Harlequin had taken to much of Collins' market, & Collins closed down, with only 13 books that year. Most of these had very small print runs & remain quite RARE today. It's difficult to estimate the print runs, but in 1943 one of their back covers claims that they sold 1,500,000 books. 1943 saw 32 Collins books, #51-82 (not even counting many reissues) - thats an average print run of under 47,000 of each. About 20 of these 32 books are relatively easy to get compared to the rest of the Collins set. The 1952 books, though 9 years newer are MUCH scarcer on the average than the 1943 books. Draw your own conclusions on the size of the 1952 print runs! By USA standards, even 100,000 copies is a small print run. After Collins' collapse, Harlequin very quickly took up the slack. The pre-1952 Harlequin remain the scarcest, as less were printed when they competed with Collins (issues #1-150, especially #1-50 which was 1949, Harlequin's 1st year). The 1952 Harlequins are suddenly LESS scarce, and as 1953 sets in, they continue to increase their print runs, explaining their drop in scarcity evident still today.
Collins produced about 5 no numbered books in the period 1945-1950, and 3 more after they creased regular publication of books in 1953-1955. All were non-fiction, most were by the very popular & prolific Canadian woman author, Kate Aitkens. All these NN's remain RARE today, except "Harvest Triumphant", perhaps because most of them were overused, read-to-death & thrown out, or possibly the original owners hold on to them (Cookbooks especially are either kept or overused). One of Kate Aitkens cookbooks had several printings over the years, including my newest example from 1975. Aitkens cookbooks had several printings over the years, including my newest example from 1975. The 1975 Edition is Extremely RARE, probably because it was one of the LAST books they produced. Besides this, the only other newer White Circle book I've heard about, to be printed in Canada post-1955 is "Goddam Gypsy" by Ronald Lee from circa-early 1970's (a Canadian autobiography).
Next to their covers/marketing techniques, White Circle's most important contribution to paperback history is their Mystery paperbacks! the majority of their output was mystery/thriller/spy & other crime-type books. They get the credit for introducing most of the major British & a lot of Canadian talent to the North American market. They also published a lot of 1st paperback edition books by American writers of mysteries & other books. Without White Circle, many many, superb, & award winning books by now famous authors would never have reached us. (Check the notes in the author cross index to see the importance of many writers). Over 95% of Collins' books are 1st North American appearances (we note: "1st paperback"), we aren't sure which ones are "true first appearances anywhere, so we usually only list if they are 1st paperback, until we get further information. The other 5 % are mainly made of re-issues of Collins books that were, 1st paperback's. Collectors of authors as famous & important as Peter Cheyney (see Cheyney writeup in author cross index), must collect the Collins paperbacks to get a 1st paperback edition collection, & with the great covers, especially on the Cheyney books, who would want any other edition?
About 90% of all White Circle paperbacks were printed by Bryant press in Toronto, & probably some in Winnipeg. They were distributed out of Toronto & Winnipeg. Many of the books published by White Circle were also published as hardcovers by Collins. Most hardcovers have extremely un-attractive dust jackets & are much less desirable to collectors than the paperbacks.
One side note, I forgot to mention about the covers, is the fact that virtually all the covers from 1945-1952, except the Westerns, have a woman on them, as the central figure. In my index I note "GGA" to indicate those with "Good-Girl-Art" cover! Two important recurring theme's on covers are: (A) Women in bed! (B) Women Smoking! Women in bed was a risque theme in the conservative 1940's. Women smoking, especially in public was very socially unacceptable at this time, it was a sign of a tramp or a sleazy woman, so the use of this theme on the covers becomes significant! The Women on Tramp or a sleazy woman, so the use of this theme on the covers becomes significant! The women on covers vary from the FEMME FATALE to women smoking, dying, drinking, holding guns at the reader, and to the seductive women, women in bondage, scantily dressed and NUDE women!!
I hope that you are in some way enlightened by this index, I feel that it should play a major role in introducing the paperback collecting one of the RAREst & most valuable paperback series of all time, yet it has been out-collected by over 10-to-1 in favor of Harlequin's. White Circle's potential for collect ability & value are unlimited once the new available copies on the market are gone!!
